A Poem from the Road

Hitchhiker on I-94

Her name must be Susan;
regardless, they're all Susans
and I'd like to have picked her up
but she has so many black-eyes
and I'm not sure what's up with that.
Maybe she'd rather fight than switch,
or is it just one abusive relationship after another?
Whatever, she's still beautiful in the sun,
a bit dusty in the breeze of that 18 Wheeler
who blew past her on the side of the road
leaver her shaking in his wake.

Next time, I'll stop,
and indulge in her fading beauty.

I scribbled this out last week while traveling. I don't know why, but this time of the year, I always seem to write poems about flowers. Check out some of my older posts: 2009 Chicory and Lace, 2007 Queen Anne's Revenge. The flower is a Black-eyed Susan.

  1. Very nice. I shall ponder the metaphor with the warm admiration of summer. Thank you.

  2. I love the poem. It seems so effortless and pays a real tribute to the lovely black-eyed beauties on the side of the road.

Queen Anne's revenge was a great name for that 2007 poem.

  9. I had totally forgotten that Rudbeckia was also called Black-eyed Susan. But more important I forgot that they grow wild in the States. They must look magnificent.

  11. Summer is peak wild flower time, indeed. While I'm taken with their seemingly unkempt beauty, looking at them too long reminds me that the days are growing shorter and eventually they'll leave. That's when spring seems to be interminably far away.

    Cheers.

  14. Nice poem.

There's a local band around here named Black-Eyed Susan. I'm only partly sure I knew that was a flower.
