An afternoon of cross-country skiing

Winter has finally arrived. It’s been cold; we’re in the coldest streak this part of Michigan has seen in a decade (after some of the warmest weather ever). It’s time to make the best of things and get out and ski. These photos are taken around Cedar Creek, south of town at a nature preserve.

Herringboning up a hill.

Look closely for the swans in the middle of the picture to the left.

The skiing was great, except for on the top of some of the hills where blowing wind was bone chilling.

  1. Beautiful photos and I bet skiing was fun! I wouldn't mind having a little more snow than we have so far here in Eastern Pennsylvania. It's been cold and is getting colder. Monday and Tuesday it is suppose to not get out of the teens in temperature.

  3. It's beautiful to look at, but this is as close as I want to get!

  4. Tim, we've been having some very cold temps--I don't think it's to get into the teens on Sunday and Monday!

Diane, you'll have to take plenty of photos and write up stories of your adventure!

Kenju, growing up in Eastern NC, I always wanted snow. As an adult, I've tended to live where I could get some.

Murf, I'm not an expert birder, but their necks are longer than geese and most of our geese here are Canadian wetbacks.

  5. Great, simply wonderful photographs. Thanks for sharing them Sage! Seems you got a solid workout skiing and battling the harsh weather.

Not sure if the photos only loaded up haphazardly on my browser but you may want to reposition them. Though it is no big deal. And that's a breathtaking photograph of the pond and an equally stellar photograph of the stream and swans.

As a warm weather Californian, I must say I am envious of your winter wonderland. Though I find 60 degree weather a bit unpleasant so who knows how I would handle snow temps. Once again, great post.

  8. V. I got another solid workout this morning--we're under blizzard conditions--but that didn't stop a neighbor and me from going out through the pasture behind our houses and to ski around the cross country run a few times--it was wonderful even though the wind child was probably -15 F or so and actual temp around 5 F.

Midori, nice picture of your city, where is it? Thanks for stopping by.

Gautami, I have a friend that is in Dehli this week, and he says it's a lot warmer than here.

  9. Nice pics Sage. It looks FRIGID!
Down here in Alabama we got down in the lower 20's. With all the moisture in our air that is bone-chilling cold. Once it gets in there it stays for a while.

    Michelle says hi.

  10. Those pictures are beautiful!
I'm green with jealousy . . about the snow, not about the skiing.
    I'm a HORRID skier. :)

  11. I was looking at the picture of the pond which was right next to the part about looking for swans but which isn't the one with the swans. I should've known.

  12. I love downhill skiing, but have never engaged in the cross-country variety. In fact, I have never really wanted to as it always appeared to me like too much work. However, after seeing your pictures, and hearing you speak of it, I'm starting to change my mind. You have influenced me far to much!

  13. I so miss cross country skiing. I went out a lot when I was a kid, because Montreal had the perfect weather and geography for it. Here in London, however, it's just not part of the landscape. The winters are just wrong - the snow never gets deep enough for long enough to cultivate a track - and most folks are into hockey.

Oh well, I'll enjoy the magic through your words and images. Thanks for taking us along.

Thank you, also, for your offer. If you come across a copy of the NYT, I'd appreciate a scan - but please don't expend any effort or expense. Your offer is very kind.
