An Unfair Dream

“That’s not fair,” I shouted in my mind as my alarm when off this morning.

I’d been a party with a number of people that I don’t know.  My neighbor was there.  Caroline is a few years younger than my mother.  She is a very graceful: the wife of a smart-aleck/poetry-quoting attorney and the daughter of a former congressman and later an ambassador.   Wherever she is at, she brightens up the room, as you’d expect for someone with her background.  She delights in my daughter and my daughter adores her.  Anyway, back to the dream.  Caroline suggested a movie and she and another woman and I decided to bug out to see the flick.  She drove and the other woman rode shot-gun.  I was in the back of her husband's old and huge station wagon.  We were in an old city with lots of brick buildings and steep hills, someplace like Asheville, North Carolina, but in the dream, it was our town even though it didn’t look like it.  As we got closer to the theater, Caroline suggested we stop for ice cream as we had 20 minutes before the show was to begin.   The creamery was across the street from the theater and we drove up an alley, behind it.  They were closed for business, but they let us in the back way and we were in the work area where they make the ice cream.  Two employees were packing freshly churned ice cream into 3 gallon tubs.  Caroline, in her enthusiastic way, asked about the various flavors and the guy began to tell about each one and how special it was.  Then, the woman who worked behind the counter fixed me double cone, asking if butter pecan and French vanilla was okay.  She was handing me the cone as the alarm went off.  Never have I been so rudely awakened!

At first, I didn’t have any idea of where this dream came from, but then I remembered that last image of the woman’s hand holding the cone out for me to take.  I’d seen that picture yesterday, in a blog!  As for stopping with Caroline for ice cream, that’s not unusual, but it’s usually something her husband initiates.  A few times each summer, he’ll call over and ask if we want to go out for ice cream.  There are two good creameries in our area, one to our west and another to our east, both about a 25 minute drive away.  One even has their own cows!  They both make wonderful ice cream.  And of course, the news about my insulin dependency means that I can no longer pig out on ice cream.  In addition, we've not gone out as frequently the last two summers as my daughter has developed a dairy allergy.  It seems as if we're all falling apart!

Waking up from this dream, I was angry I didn’t get to enjoy the cone in my sleep.

  3. Funny you should blog about a dream. I had one on Saturday night that I'm blogging about tomorrow. My dream wasn't so unfair though.

  4. That definitely seems unfair. At least in sleep one should get to be decadent.

  5. That's the way dreams are. The nightmares never end and the good ones end as you're reaching out for the reward.

Sort of like life, I guess.

    Cheers.

  6. Very unfair dream!!

I'm sorry ice cream did that to you! It's been unfair to me too, just yesterday I made myself a bowl and then it (tragically) fell and spilled all over the floor. :(

  8. If you don't usually have such vivid dreams I'd ring the doc and tell them about this. There may well be an aspect that reflects on the meds. From what I've read, insulin is downright nasty stuff outside of very very narrow parameters.
    Keep well fellow.

  10. isn't it funny where our dreams take us...and the messages they give us...I enjoy going back and figuring out what my brain is really trying to tell me, and sometimes warn us! We need to listen to more of our dreams.....and to pay attention to what our body is trying to tell us too!

  12. Oh that's frustrating and an understandable dream. Occasionally I'll dream that I'm about to smoke a cigarette. I quit 30 years ago and the only way I would dare sneak a puff is in dreams. If I wake up before I indulge, I'm disappointed. Silly but true.

  13. Lynn, yep!

Dawn, I thought I saw the ice cream cone picture on your blog, but I'm not sure...

Ed, I like the idea of waking up laughing, I've done that a few times

Charles, decadent sleep, sounds sinfully innocent! :)

Randall, you've hit on a TRUTH about life!

Callistra: does your bowls tend to fall off the table more "down there" than up here? Just asking...

John, my blood sugar has been staying mostly below 150! I've got three doctors up here looking after me and a medic from SC, I can't go wrong!

Vince, I do often have vivid dreams and often write them down which I think leads to more vivid ones... I am going to check out insulin and dreams

Brian, I just have to be careful and "shoot-up" for ice cream

Karen, yes, our dreams do somethings give us clues, which is why I jot down in a journal notes about my dreams

Pia, why did you give up diary? was it a health issue?

Hilary, You gave up smoking 30 years ago? Your parents should be punished--after all, that would make you what, a five year old smoker? :)

  14. I actually remember a dream where I was in court before Judge Marilyn Milian and wound up asking her out! She was amused and asked me if I understood that she was married. I asked her with equal amusement if an impending divorce was imminent? Sudenly I awoke. In fact, I blogged about it and mailed her a copy with a kind note. :D)

  15. Dude you will learn to live with insulin and it does not mean ever fine thing you have ever tasted will kill you. You're still new to it. It is scary for most folks and no one wants to die from it but like I said to you, control your diabetes not the other way round.

  16. I might lay off reading blogs for a few days if I were you :) Kidding. I've dreamt of bloggers, and vice versa.

I remember dreams like that, where I wake up before I want to. If only we could go back to sleep and continue the dream where we left off. I think I managed that once, when I was much younger. But now I'm not sure if it really happened or if I just dreamt that I woke up and went back to sleep, if that makes sense. I'll shut up now.

  17. You got it Bro--GREAT JOB on the Sugars!!!!! Seriously!!!!

  18. That must be hard. Having to watch one's diet for sugar I think would be challenging in our society though of course not impossible.
