This and That

Photos of children from the Yucatan.

As often happens this time of the year, at least since I’ve moved into the Midwest, my sinuses became infected and by the time I went see the doc, a bronchial infection was also brewing. I’ve coughed and coughed till sore and have drank enough whiskey and honey to cure the whooping cough and for me not to care. The drugs do seem to be taking care of things, even though I am still tired and haven’t been to the gym in well over a week. Hopefully by the end of the week, I’ll be sputtering along like normal.

Yesterday morning I was eating my Shredded Wheat and turned on the TV to catch the news. Newt Gingrich was on one of the morning shows and he was talking about how we’re heading to foreign policy disaster with Obama. He really disliked him smiling and shaking hands with Chavez and loosing restrictions on Cuba. It was mentioned in the discussion about him bowing to the Saudi king. Good grief! It’s not like Obama didn’t already inherit a colossal foreign policy nightmare brought on by the grimacing Bush, whose splendid little war in Iraq has ruined our reputation and is costing us a fortune. Bush isn’t a McKinley. Let’s cut Obama some slack, lest we be totally isolated in the world. Personally, I think we should have ended the embargos on Cuba years ago.

I got to see Rick Bragg in Kalamazoo last Thursday evening and even to meet him afterwards. His first words to me were, “you aren’t from around here, are you?” He got a bit teary-eyed talking about his mamma and his brother and then said he can’t cry in front of crowds in Alabama because all the men will take him out back and beat him because they don’t want any sensitive genes to take hold…

  1. The children look so happy! I was so cheered, looking at the photos!

  2. I just listen to Newt, Cheney, "the Architect" and others and the thing that crosses my mind is that they just don't get it. Fortunately, not a lot of people buy into their arguments from what I have seen.

  3. Great photos of beautiful children and I totally agree with you on Cuba. Have you seen the photo of Obama shaking paws with the family dog of the President of Mexico? It's a cute Golden Retriever, and El Presidente's children are clearly delighted. Could "flea-bagging" protests be far behind?

  4. Happy children, Sage. The ones we met in Mexico were beggars.

  5. Gautami, yes, they were!

Ed, it's a shame for we do need an opposition party, but it's got to be rational... They need to reinvent themselves and as long as folks like Cheney is still running his mouth, they'll only be defending the past.

Diane, I missed that photo, but somewhere in my archives, back in late 2005 or maybe early 2006, there is a photo of my and the "first dog" of Honduras!

Kenju, this was a Mayan village off the beaten path and the children were delightful.

  6. Brother...skip the honey.

In that second picture all of the kids look happy, especially the one in that funny hat.

Gingrich is an ass and not some biblical one either, just an average run of the mill ass looking for power.

  8. I am suspicious of anyone who can find fault with a little grace and a little tact.

  9. Walking Guy: The guy in the funny hat was having a blast.

Michael, thanks, happy kids always brighten the day.

Jay, I may quote you, you've said a lot in a few words!

  10. Adorable picture. Sage, make sure you are drinking a glass of water or juice every 90 minutes or so -- it will help the sinus/bronchitis situation a lot, although of course you will be spending some corresponding time in the WC. I have found this gets things moving toward health a bit faster. The whiskey & lemon is good, but it does dehydrate. Hope you feel better soon!

  11. Sage, that's the cutest little girl at the top. While I was in Iraq everyone wrote me asking about seeing the kids. Everyone thought it was handing out packages and shit. Well, not quite.
Any how, I hope you are getting better. Last month I was exiled to bed for three days. That wasn't fun.

Not to counter you, but the way I see it is we are on a Foreign Policy Falacy no matter what. No matter who. We have no Grand Strategy, no clear out come. We're just a spinning top.

Lastly, I'd like to meet Rick Bragg, myself.

  17. As an Alabamian, I feel like the only appropriate response to Mr. Bragg's last statement is this:

    I'd argue if I could.

  18. As for the political stuff, I don't claim to know if Obama is making all the right decisions. But it is very clear that whatever we were doing for the past eight years was not working.

  19. I love Obama. I do. I think the guy is trying with all his heart. And I see this country becoming even more split by such a negative GOP. I wish they could just shut up for once.

I also love those sweet little children in your photographs!
