This is October Up North?

My friend J, fishing this past Friday. Notice the change of color in the trees. The shurbs are particularly nice. Because we had such a dry summer, I don't think the leaves will be outstanding this fall, but it's always nice to see color in the trees.

The trees are turn colors and leaves are already beginning to accumulate on the ground. The calendar says it’s October, but tonight, after taking out the trash, I laid in my hammock for ten minutes listening to the sounds of the night. I was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops, not normally the attire for October in these latitudes. But it’s been warm lately, highs in the mid to upper 80s with lots of humidity. The AC is still running. Is it global warming or is hell boiling over? Whatever it is, I don’t like it. I didn’t move up here to sweat in October… but enough ranting.

Life isn’t slowing down any. Work is still going crazy, but it’s all good. I did get a chance to take off Friday for some bass fishing. We were using rubber (plastic worms) and had a blast. Of the 10 or so bass I caught, only one was below the legal limit. My nicest was this 19 inch bass caught on an ultra-light rod with 4 pound test line. What this picture doesn’t show is that I’m wearing TEVAS. I didn’t worry about wearing boots or waiters (okay Ed, I meant waders) and even stuck my feet in the water. It's that warm.

I should have held the fish closer to the camera so that it would look even larger!

After tomorrow, my schedule lightens up just a bit and I hope to get some more stories posted. It’s also supposed to cool off a bit—about 15 degrees or so on Tuesday—but still rather warm for October. Take care and thanks for stopping by and listening to my ranting and bragging... I appreciate you all.

  1. I'm ready for fall!!! The bottom pic has a little color, and certainly a beautiful mirror in the water.

  2. I'm hoping the weather turns cooler in NYC and the Berkshires soon too!

    Quite a fish there, Sage!

  3. You may as well come back to NC, Sage. It will be 90+ tomorrow and hot all week. I am SO ready for fall. Our leaves are just turning brown and falling off - the drought is horrible!

  5. I think I'm going to have to go get some waiters to wear. I didn't realize they were that warm? However, my wife might have a problem with me wearing a waiter, especially if the waiter is cute.

  6. Sage - I agree. My stack of turtlenecks have been calling out my name since I wore the ceremonial first one a few weeks back. I hear cool nights and warm days make the leaves drop from the trees faster which I hope is true. The city just announced that there will be only one curbside pick up of leaves this year - the week of Nov 5th.

  7. Kontan, the leaves are slowly changing--I too am ready for fall.

Diane, by the end of the week here it's to be cooler, hopefully you'll have better weather in NYC and MA. Have a great time.

Kenju, I'll be back down there in the end of November--hopefully it'll be cold enough by then that the bluefish are running!

Mistress, You fish probably smells better, well maybe :)

Ed, Okay, you got me... Martin Luther said that if you sin, you should do so boldly. That said, you can have a cute waiter, I'll take a cute waitress! :)

  8. Murf, It seems that my oaks are never finished dropping before mid to late November--it's fall and it's almost time to forget football and enjoy that other fall sport--the battle between you and Ed over racking leaves!

  9. I've had some leaves fall off my oak tree out front and already I can see my neighbor the lawn nazi anxiously gauging the wind to see if they will blow across the street to his yard.

  10. I second what Kenju said. It's 90 in SC too, and I already packed away my summer clothes and got my sweaters out. Bring on fall!!!

  11. There was an article in the local paper today talking about leaves dying or not changing colors or something. There's also a new Target opening soon. And some people have sued over the smoking ban in local restaurants. That's the big news around here.

You should have posted a picture of the fish next to one of those tiny model ships that go in bottles.

  13. Ed, the leaves are falling fairly rapidly now... soon the leaf wars begin!

Jaded, I've yet to get out my sweaters!

Bone, If I was any good in photoshop, I could have myself in the mouth of that fish--a Jonah reincarnation...

Homecoming on Monday? Have fun--homecoming can't be the best week to teach.

  14. Beautiful pics. Nice bass! ;)

My eyes were playing tricks on me. I thought I read "we were using rubber (plastic women) and had a blast." I laughed, then noticed it was "worms." I need sleep!

  15. Man...nothing like sitting on the lake and wetting a hook! Wish I had time to do that. It sure is hot enough here to go fishing!

  16. Freshman homecoming...the real deal for the big kids is Friday. Yes, homecoming week is a tough time to teach, but at least it is a memory made.

  17. Sage, that is a good one. Did you fry him? I don't suppose your gearing up for ice fishing? Maybe I would not have minded staying on at Ft. McCoy for a year.

It's trying to turn fall down here.

  19. I really like that last lake picture.Beautiful!

It's been way too warm in Pennsylvania, too. Today, it is finally a little cooler. The weather people though are calling for a warmer winter than usual.

  20. We have very little color here too. It was still in the high 80s until today. I hate it for the color because we need the tourists along the parkway. I love your big fish! Look at you go!!!! Great picture.

Do you know when we went to Vegas it was colder there than here in Virginia? Hard to believe.

  21. Only in Michigan can it be 90 degrees on Monday and 41 this morning!

The fall color will be peak here in a couple weeks.
