Bird Feeder Bandits

All along I have been blaming the squirrels for eating me out of house and home. Squirrels are nothing compared to these bird feeder bandits. I watch these three deer clean out two bird feeders in ten minutes. They weren't even bothered by me standing in the dining room, fifteen feet away, snapping pictures through the window the dog keeps smeared up by peering out of it with his nose on the glass.

  5. Kontan, these guys have become friends with the dog too! The animal world may be out to get me.

Jewaira, good to have you back around. Thumper? BTW, it's been a very warm winter here, December was 7 degrees F warmer than normal.

    Belizegial: Thanks for stopping by.

Murf, we have had flurries on and off for the past two days, but less than an inch of snow on the ground

  6. Looks a bit more than that. I hope A.I. doesn't see this. He may shot his computer monitor just out of habit. :)

  7. Ah, the poor hungry dears....surely you don't begrudge them a little bird seed, do you?

  8. Murf, redneck hunting, right throught he window, I haven't thoguht about it, but I'll have to get a silencer as it's illegal to shoot a gun inside the city limits and I'm about a 100 yards inside.

Kenju, a little birdseed? At the rate they're consuming, I'll have to buy seed by the truck load. And they like the good stuff too.

  9. You must have some pretty good bird seed in their, perhaps with a little molasses or other sweetener in it.

The deer pass about a block south of my house in droves and fortunately leave me and my garden alone. The rabbits however are voracious and require me to fence off my garden anyway.

  10. I must've missed the city when I visited. ;)

  11. Ed, I thought the fence around your garden was to keep the chatty, neighbor girls away.

  12. That's a great picture. "Caught in the act"

  13. Don't you remember Bambi?

  14. Murf - It didn't work. Neighbor father brought one of his girls over to our house one night so she could apologize for stealing tomatoes.

  15. May I inquire as to why your birdfeeders are set at deer height, rather than bird height? That could be contributing to the problem.

  16. Ed, the one had a collection of songbird seeds (mixed), the other had sunflower seeds.

Murf, we are a city, it may be a small city, but it is a city

    THanks Kevin,

Pia, I don't remember bambi eating folks birdseed

Diane, the feeders are close to the house, but the deers don't havea problem coming up and looking into the windows (I wonder if a door was left open, if they might come in--the dog might invited them in)

  17. I should note that these are only two of the seven bird feeders in the backyard--three of them are really high and even the squirrels can't get them (and I keep the filled). THe others the squirrels can get into and even one of the feeders that's a bit over six feet off the ground, there was once a deer that would get into it by standing on back feet.

  18. So who is the bird lover in the family?

  19. Poor little things, they are so hungry. The Labradors keep the deer out of the yard except when they are napping indoors and then a few babies will come out to eat. Thank heavens they havent' gotten into my feeders. I can barely afford keeping all the birds and squirrels up!

  20. Absolutely wonderful photo. And I can't believe how friendly, or possibly bossy, these deer are. And you say they've made friends with the dog? Yeah, perhaps you should worry about an animal revolt, lol. Anyway, that's a truly great photo.

  21. Murf, we all love birds here--it's probably one thing the Mrs and I have in common.

Deana, these deer eat well, this is a doe and her two fawns (who were born in the spring) and they've been around ever since and live inside the city limits which keeps them from becoming stew (and since there is a field and wood behind us, they don't even have to cross streets).

V, yeah, I've thought I might need to re-read Animal Farm.

  22. We have the same problem here... To a point were if I'm banging on the window, they'll just look at me with that look that says : you're bothering us, women. We're eating. Go away...

Michele sent me ; have a great weekend !

  23. Wow, that is the one thing that bugs me about Phoenix area - I never see any squirrels. :(
They provide a lot of entertainment.
    Cute Deer.

  24. I’m an avid birder also, but I would feed deer filet mignon just to be that close to them!
