More Cross Country Sking

It’s been a cold day. This morning before the wind got to be too strong, I went out with a neighbor skiing behind our houses. If you ski across a field, you can get back into an area where there are the high school cross-country trails and even some old roads. However, there are many down trees, more so than the last time I skiied here.

My dog also went with us. He doesn't like having his picture taken (he's afraid a flash will pop), but I got a backside shot of him. He loves the snow, but after a couple miles was ready to be done as the snow gets into his paws. He had to keep stopping and gnawing out the snow that had become packed into his paws. It was about 5 degrees F, with a wind chill well below zero. It was cold enough that when the wind blew the space between my glasses and hat would sting and give me brain freeze. I’m sure some of you think my brain stays that way. By noon, the wind had picked up extensively, clouds moved back in, and snow was blowing. It was bitterly cold; it was good that I had plenty of work to do inside.

It's amazing that there are still pockets of water that doesn't freeze. There is a spring here that feeds this small pond.

As the ten day forecast has us staying below freezing, I'm hoping there will be more days of skiing.

  1. So pretty there! And good to finally see the dog - you can get him booties for the snow - google "dog booties for snow" and you will find lots of online sites

  2. I swear I'd be hopping in my car and driving south!

  3. Diane, I've thought about that, but the last two years we've received so little snow that it never became critical. He does love to run in the snow and to put his nose in the snow and kick it up and snap at it as if he's catching it.

Kenju, the roads are pretty bad, lol. Actually, having grown up down east in NC, where we got snow every three or four years, I'm still a kid and get all excited when I we have snow.

  4. Sage: I can't complain here in Vegas. Beautiful shots here. BTW: I do have a movie scheduled next week over at my site on FMSN that you might like. Have a great week and stay warm!

  5. I need to send you and Tim off somewhere to photograph a warmer climate. If you manage to get booties on the pup, let me know how that goes. I've tried that with Hooch and he's paralyzed as if I've actually cut his feet off instead of just covering them. It's kind of funny in a pathetic kind of way.

  6. You're a braver man than me. It registered minus ten on the mercury tube and except for a brief dash to and from the car at church, I stayed inside.

  7. Michael, rub it in about Vegas--actually, while you are there you should try to find time to hike down into Black Canyon and soak in some of the hot springs along the Colorado River.

Murf, Tim and I will glady accept your all expense paid trip to Tahiti--and we'll send you plenty of photos and maybe even a post card if you're nice.

Ed, It was even colder this morning--minus 17 at 6 A.M. We're in a period where it's not suppose to get into the double digits for five or so days. I'll still get out and ski a bit.

  13. Murf, I second Sage's response to your comment. An all expense paid trip to Tahiti and I'll gladly send you hundreds of digital pictures. :)

I'd like to be in weather like that, at least for awhile.

  15. Sage, dear, I believe if someone were going to take a picture of my . . . rear . . . I wouldn't like having my picture taken, either.

    Just sayin. :)
    Poor dog.

  16. Oh,and Murf, for the trip to Tahiti, you'll also have to cover the expenses of bringing my girlfriend with me. ;)

  17. You're getting awfully demanding, Tim. :-)

  19. Make sure you take a picture of Tim in his swimsuit, Sage. I'll even use my AAA discount to get two rooms - one for the guys and one for the girlfriend on a completely different floor because you know how I don't condone any of that pre-marital stuff.

(I tried to write that last part with a serious face but had no luck)

  20. I enjoyed reading your post as I'm thinking of going cross country skiing for a holiday next winter. I hear it's hard work so I need to start training. I love the snow but we get so little of it here in the South West of the UK!

    Nice pics!

  21. Actually my girlfriend probably couldn't go anyway. She's in seminary working towards a counseling degree. Her course work will be done the end of June but she may still need some more internship hours through the summer. So, Murf, I'll give you a break; you won't need to make provisions for my girlfriend to go along with me. You'll just have to pay for my expensive phone bills! ;)

  22. Murf, I want my own room, Tim might snore!

Bob-kat, I'm thinking of leaving the snow behind for Tatihi! Do you want to borrow my skis?

Tim, Thanks for not bring your personal Shrink along--I might have been in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tim - And here I always thought you were low maintenance. :-)

Sage - I doubt Tim would be the snorer of the two.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Murf and Sage, I've been told that I sometimes snore so Sage might want a separate room. :)

Murf, a girlfriend can change everything. ;) I'm still low maintenance in my own personal needs; but my girlfriend is worthy of all the attention, friendship, and service I can give her. :)
