Friday the 13th, Snow Update

The picture was taken yesterday afternoon, during a break in the snow. It's still snowing.

Bad things are suppose to happen on Friday the 13th. I normally make it through these days without a problem, but this Friday the 13th is living up to its name. It started with no electricity (the power went off about 9:30 last night and came back on sometime after midnight). This was followed by waking up and learning from the radio (for the cable TV was out) that school was closed for the day. And it’s still snowing, even though it’s supposed to be in the low 40s today. Yesterday we got 8 inches of snow, a record for this early in the year (most of it melted due to the ground being warm). The dogwood outside the kitchen window is ruined and a huge branch from a maple tree was blocking the driveway. With leaves still on the trees, limbs are down all over town, which is why there have been so many power failures and why they closed schools. From what I’ve heard, there are still several thousand people without power in the county. The roads are still clear and this will melt soon, I’m sure.

On another note, I recently leaned through Kevin’s blog about a Florida woman who was awarded a $11.3 million dollar judgment, an outrageous settlement from a court down there in a liable suit involving another blogger. The other blogger didn’t even show up in court. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it. I suppose the lesson here is to be nice, tell the truth, and stay away from Florida bloggers whose names being with an “S”! (to understand this inside joke, look up my January 12, 2006 post in my archives)

Enough complaining, for I am really happy with the snow which, at this time of the year, I receive as a gift! Time to put a fire in the fireplace.

  1. Hey we have almost the same title for today's post.
So you got snow huh...pretty early winter isn't it?
Definitely gives you a reason to fire up the hearth

    Hi from Michele

  2. Wow...beautiful, though. :-)

Thanks for the links on the blogging issues.

  3. Gee, what a coincidence that TWO people have the same 'Friday the 13th' title. It's kismet. I wish I had been that original when I wrote my entry today.

I hope no one ever sues for sarcasm.

  4. It does seem like too much of a coincidence that two bloggers with first names that start with 'S' are holed up in Broward County. But if that is where all radical bloggers want to go, I'm for it because then I can filter them out much easier.

  5. Leah, the fireplace is lit and I even moved a small TV in the kitchen in order to watch Detroit vs. Oakland

Dawn, it is beautiful, but I'm afraid the leaves will not be quite as beautiful after this melts (and it's melting fast)

Murf, Kismet and I will join together in a class action suit against you for deflamation of character

Ed, is there a way you can block out Broward County folks?

  8. At least we weren't the only ones with a hefty October snowfall.

I don't think Ellicottville got any snow, since you asked. Planning a little ski trip?

  9. Michigan, eh? Your boys play my boys tonight in the Motor City. Damn cable's out around here, though.

  10. The snow looks beautiful! But I don't want it here just yet. Let it wait till December and maybe we can have just enough snow to make a white Christmas and a snowman then. :)

  11. Pergo, who are your boys? I'm only interested in baseball right now, but I do think Detriot and Buffalo play on Sunday. As for Ellicottville, I spent three winters there skiing, but that was a long time ago. I'd love to go back there and ski for a few days.

Tim, I do hope we have a white Christmas along with you. The snowman we built last night is slowly melting.

  12. Wow. Seems snow is falling over the place. Well, all over the northeastern portion of this continent.

I like snow because of its picturesque quality and because it leads to skiing and snowboarding. But I don't have to deal with it directly because it doesn't snow over here. We drive about 3 hours away to get our ski and snowboard on. Perhaps I wouldn't think so highly of snow if I had to endure snowstorms and sidewalk shoveling and car trouble. But, as an outsider, I think I would have to say that the snow is worth it. Though I understand how most people think it's a little too early to be welcoming in the snow. But it is glad to hear Sage that you are ready for the snow. And I hope you're living in a winter wonderland soon enough.

  13. I was referring to the Sabres/Red Wings throw down... Not the Bills/Lions yawner.

    Good luck in the ALCS.

  14. I am actually a little jealous. We almost never get snow in West Texas.

  15. We got nailed by the white stuff as well, and I was rather pleased by it all. I know it's cold and miserable and horribly inconvenient. But there's something neat about this time of year, when we all batten down the hatches and get ready for the colder weather ahead.

It's a great excuse to break out the mugs and make something warm and cozy. Here's to more weather-induced drama in our lives.

  18. I am not ready for the white stuff...not yet. But I do wish I would get the first frost so I could plant the 120 tulip bulbs lying in my house!
    Beautiful picture.
We lit our first fire last night...one of the best parts of cold weather for me.

  20. I was practically crying when I saw FROST here yesterday... let alone snow. I hate hate hate hate hate the winter. I love the Fall (I'm a boots lover) but I absolutely hate the cold and snow of winter.

And I hope I don't get sued over my Cyberia blog!! LOL

  22. Michele sent me, Sage.

We got some frost overnight here, Sage, and that's as much as I'd want. Cold is not my friend but I guess you must like it. I guess it'll all eventually melt tho.

  23. Wow! I would say that looks like a postcard, but that doesn't do it justice. That's beautiful.

I hope and wish and pray that we get a couple of inches this year. Just once.

  24. Looks pretty. . . but still, I think I would have been freaked out by snow in early October.

That court case is just utter BS.
