K is for Katamandu

I’m in the middle of the A-Z challenge, listing bucket lists of places that I’ve not been, but would I’d like to visit in my life.

Today, I’m thinking about places to visit that starts with a K.  There’s Kansas, but I’ve been there many times.  There’s Kalamazoo, but I’ve been there many more times.  There are more exotic places like Kilimanjaro, where I could read Hemingway’s short story about death within the shadows of the mountain.  Then there is Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.  And there’s Kenya, a vast country in the heart of Africa.  I’d enjoy visits to all of those places, but the place which makes my “bucket list” is Katmandu.  And incredible trip would be to make my way overland from India, into the Himalayan Mountains and to the exotic capital of Nepal.  Although I’d be interested in seeing some of the Hindu and Buddhist sites of the city, my main interest would be to head up into the mountains.  Although I have long given up any desire of climbing the peaks of the Himalayas, I’d still like to gaze up at Mt. Everest.  And then maybe an overland trip to my “L” bucket list destinations.

I think I'm going to Katmandu
That's really, really where I'm going to
If I ever get out of here
That's what I'm gonna do

  3. I'm with you on that one. If I made it to 'base camp' on Everest, that would be far enough indeed!

  4. When I saw Katmandu in the title, the first thing that popped into my head was Seger's song. :) I'm sure it would be a fascinating place to explore.

  5. Now this is one that never lit a fire for me at all.
The stories of my youth based in that region saw that city as the start point for adventures further on. In an odd way the hippy's started the craze for it with their drug addled quests for a real religion.

    1. I mean, I don't know how to say it, but the tops of their structures are more interesting than any ceiling around here. =)

  7. I'd have to put Katmandu above Kansas on that list. I've been to Kansas. Once. That's was enough, but don't tell anyone I said that. My mother's family is there.

  8. I was there 3 years ago before the dreadful earthquake last year and got to see some beautiful temples.

  10. I've always loved the exotic sound of the name Katmandu. It would be a fun visit someday.

  11. The forests and rivers below Everest sound beautiful, but I've read too many disastrous books about climbing that mountain to ever want to try it.

  12. Glad to see your K was Kathmandu--I have a special place in my heart for it, since it was my birthplace. This is a great blog, by the way. I love to wander, too.
