A-Z Challenge... B is for Boston

Bali, Brazil, Bhutan, Boston, there are a lot of places I’ve missed that begin with a B.  For my bucket list, I’ll choose Boston (even though the others are enticing.  Boston is the only large city in the continental United States that I haven’t visited.  I can’t believe I’ve missed it for I have walked across Western MA, through the Berkshires, when I did the Appalachian Trail. Once in the city, I’d walk I’d walk the Charles River (with the “Dirty Water” by the Standells playing in my head), take an afternoon nap in Boston Commons while dreaming of Minutemen, visit the Old North Church (and climb in the belfry if allowed), tour John Adam’s old home and perhaps, when it is 5 PM somewhere, find a Sam Adam’s tavern (or seek out Cheers).  I’d fill up with lobster rolls, oyster sliders and fish and chips.  Then I’d catch a game (or two) at Fenway Park, the oldest stadium in major league baseball and a classic one that I’d love to visit.  If I have a free day, I might head up to Plymouth or Salem, but more likely I’d be drawn by the salt air to Cape Cod.

  1. This is wonderful, and one of my favorite places to visit. This sounds like a very interesting and enjoyable challenge it'll be fun to follow. Enjoy the beginning of April, and this weekend.

    1. It seems an odd city not to have visited... but I am enjoying the weekend (especially if Carolina keeps winning!)

  2. Now you see I haven't been to the Berkshires yet, so I'll have to start my own Bucket List! Bhutan is also a place I want to go. If you get there first, let me know how you like it.

    1. Outside of Fenway, Cape Cod would be second on my list!

  4. Boston is one of those cities I've visited, but not visited enough. History is my great love and when we last went there, all the places I wanted to linger in were in the midst of a big Italian festival - which was grand, but distracted from the historical parts for yours truly.

  5. Like you, I've never been to Boston, but will some day. I have been to Bhutan. It is pristine, gorgeous, the people wonderful, and the government measures the GNH
(gross national happiness) every year to find out what they can do to make their people happy. Imagine that?

  7. I did everything except visit Cheers. From what others told me, the inside of the building along the commons that 'looks' like Cheers is just a bar with high priced food. The actual set of the inside of Cheers is along the Freedom Trail in Boston somewhere but I think they charged admission to get in and I was trying to make up some time so I skipped it. The Freedom Trail was my favorite and while most walked it in a day, I took two days so I could stop and do other things like ingesting lobster rolls, Boston clam chowder and daydream on the Commons.

    1. Yeah, I don't think Cheers would make my list. I remember your trip there and before I go, I'd have to go back and read your post

  9. Boston is undoubtedly an interesting spot. But I think it resonates more with US people given the place it had in the genesis of the republic.
Outside, it tends to in and out of awareness/fashion. Boston Legal with Capt Kirk and that Stargate fellow was excellent. Earlier again you had Cheers, but also The Paper Chase, a television series based on a 1970 novel by John Jay Osborn, Jr. I'd say it was a spin off of Love Story. John Houseman was in it.

    1. Oh yeah, the Paper Chase, it was good and Love Story was the "chic-flick" of my Jr. High years

  10. Boston is a wonderful city. I thought about moving there for grad school. It would have been a great place to have spent a few years. Cheers - Ellen | http://thecynicalsailor.blogspot.com/2016/04/b-is-for-boatyard-nancy-drew.html

  11. Thanks for your comment on my blog. I've not read Art of Writing but will check it out. I love to read what other authors wrote about writing. When I was in Paris last year I found, WHY I WRITE by George Orwell. A few years back, at a garage sale, I found this by Dean Koontz, HOW TO WRITE BESTSELLING FICTION.

  12. Don't forget to get an order of crabcakes down by the water, excellent!
I enjoyed your Alaska post also, if you do go give consideration to the Kenai Peninsula also, particularly Homer, at the end of the road. I lived up there for 10 years long ago.

  19. An expensive city, from what I'm told and few drive their own cars in favor of the mass transit. I'd prefer to keep my car!

  20. I've been to Boston and the Berkshires -- but never walked across them, or any of the trails. Would definitely like to do that sometime!
