Updates...

Yesterday wasn’t the most memorable birthday as I had lots of stuff going on at work and pretty much spend the day busy. Hopefully I’ll get some time in the next day or two to rest… I am thankful to Karen. In her non-political blog (the blog in my side bar is her political one), she created me this cake. I wish that really was me, getting ready to make a long run down a mountain… Now a mountain covered with icing, that sounds like something you’d find at the Big Rock Candy Mountain! Thanks Karen.

A few days before Christmas I had a blog with a picture of a puzzle I’d done which shows 36 cities to see before one died (which are from the 1000 places to see before you die book). No one took a stab at all the cities, but in case you are curious, these are the cities pictured in the puzzle (from left to right, top to bottom).

1. San Francisco, Copenhagen, Boston, Sydney, Rio de Janerio, New York
2. Dublin, Budapest, Bangkok, Berlin, Milan, Beijing
3. Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Paris, Moscow, Madrid, London
4. Barcelona, Cuzco, Rome, New Orleans, Jerusalem, Istanbul
5. Vienna, Venice, Prague, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Florence
6. Montreal, Lhasa, Las Vegas, Edinburgh, Chicago, Philadelphia

  1. What a great cake! Maybe you'll get to have a good post-b'day weekend.

No way I could have picked the cities. It would have been embarrassing to try :)

  2. I wasn't having much luck id-ing the cities either . . . however, that post got me hooked on puzzles! Besides the online ones, I bought a small yellowstone puzzle that I did in the Salt Lake City airport (while drinking glasses of pinot grigio) and bought a cool wolf puzzle to do at home!

  3. Kontan, some of the cities were really hard--like the market in Tokyo, I've been to Tokyo, but would have never guessed it.

Diane, I've seen that you've gotten hooked on puzzles! Ah, the Salt Lake airport, I've spent more time in that place waiting on commuter flights that I'd like to remember. You should have been drinking some of the Walsatch Ales--great beers!

  5. Happy belated birthday, Sage.

Wow, looking at all those cities and how few I've seen, I'm feeling insignificant at the moment. And not very well traveled :)

  6. Well I've got eight of the cities under my belt already. I'm bagging my ninth city (New York) in nine days.

  7. I think I'm going to come up with a puzzle that features 36 cities that I think one should see before dying. They would all have one thing in common that these 36 probably don't have - working, flushable toilets. :-)

  8. Karen, thanks for your labors!

Bone, I feel the same way.

Ed, I've just got 8 under my belt too.

Murf, maybe I should do a puzzle with 36 pictures of various styles of toilets I experienced; then again, maybe not.

JUST A REMINDER: click on the picture to see it in a larger scale and to be able to distinguish one city from another.

  12. I'm glad I saw the cake AFTER I had breakfast. Otherwise I might have been inclined to go for the sugar instead of my usual healthy plateful of morning goodness.

I'm so sorry I missed your birthday. It sounds like you marked it well. I'm glad you shared the experience here: we should all be surrounded by friends when we mark important milestones.

Visiting from Michele's this morning...trying to catch up on everything I've missed!

  13. Awww, man! Wish I'd seen that post! I'd have sooooo given it a shot! :) I think I'd have done pretty well too, looking at it now. I've only been to 12 of them (yikes! I need to start playing the lottery so I can win and then afford to travel again), but I know a lot about those I haven't been too :)

    Happy belated birthday!!!
