Just Playing

Yesterday, I hinted at books being one of my favorite idols. I define them as idols as they are a material object that I cling to and hate to give up (although I do enjoy being an evangelist and lending them out). Also, I’ve often found solace in books, which is a second idolatry characteristic I’ve given to them. I took photo snippets of some of my books and blended them together to create this collage/altar. Should I make this my new profile picture? What do you think?

  3. Unlike the others, I have to wonder...is this really something to be proud of? ;-)

  4. I've been wanting to read up on the history of Brigham Young and I see you have the book. Was it a good read?

I see you have what looks to be a mint condition Cold Mountain book. My copy is in the same condition because every time I try to read it, I get too depressed after just a dozen pages and quit.

  5. Think they make a great profile. Better than your bare feet :)

  6. Kenju, Diane, Kevin: I think I'll put it up after our current snow storm passes--as we approach spring, I need something other than the fireplace

    Jay, thanks for stopping by

Murf, what is there not to be proud of? You'd prefer a smelly hat, eh?

Ed, the book on Brigham Young is by Leonard Arrington and is a solid work. Arrington was a Mormon, so his view is a bit biased, but he didn't paint him as only a Saint either--which got him criticized within the Mormon Church. If you really wanted to get into Young, I'd recommend blending Arrington's work with so of the recent work on the Mountain Meadows Massacre--probably Will Bagley's "Blood of the Prophets" (which I have but have only read parts of). I'm not aware of a good critical book on Young by a non-Mormon, like Frawn Brodie's book (No Man Knows MY History) on Joseph Smith.

Cold Mountain isn't in mint condition--I did read it and enjoyed it

Pia, what's wrong with my bare feet--i'm a barefoot kind of guy!

  7. Well it's no golden calf, but I guess it'll do.

  8. Don't listen to Pia. I like the toes.

The even scarier part is that this picture is just a SAMPLING of your books. You have much, much more than what is in the picture.

  9. I hate lending me books. Some people just coveniently forget to return.

You can make this as your profile picture. It suits you well.

  10. Bone, golden calves are just plain tacky!

Murf, we all know about your fetishes. ;) Yes, I know that I have many more books, but I got tired of taking pictures and trying to fit them into a single picture

    Gautami, thanks.

  11. No... I like the feet and fire. Anyone can do books, only you can do the great outdoors AND intellectual stuff!

I'm with the guy above me...I don't like lending them out either unless it is mother or my best friend because I will pester them until I get it back.
