Last Sail (of the season)

Jim and Todd (notice my busted seat)

Things have been rather crazy in my sageless domain recently.  Michigan seems to be void of sage except in gardens.  I haven't even finished writing about my trip to sageland (Nevada and Utah) back in July.  But the leaves are beginning to change color and the temperature is dropping.  Yesterday,  I had the last sail of the year with two friends who helped me take down the mast.  The boat is out of the water now.  Before storage, I have some work to do on it--cleaning the hull and repairing a seat that busted.  It was a good summer with lots of days on the water with all kinds of wind.

  1. The leaves have been slowly changing here as well...my absolute favorite time of year.

  2. I so do not think summer was anywhere near long enough. I think you need thirty or forty more sailing trips.

  3. It looked like it snowed in Chicago. Down here we're just cooling off a tad. but I guess elsewhere in the world the seasons are indeed changing.

  4. hum, my comment wouldn't post. I was just talking about how the seasons seem to be changing in many places, but not much down here.

  7. Looks kinda chilly out there! Glad you got out for one last sail.

You gonna be checking out any playoff baseball this year?

  8. I can't swim but can I schedule a ride on it for me or at least Big A next year? It sounds fun. I'll wear floaty wings.

    1. I will sign you both up, but you gotta be able to do jump from one side to another and good at handling sheets (which probably isn't at all what you're thinking!)

  9. It may seem an odd question but on what are you sailing, I don't think you've ever said. I read Lake Michigan can be squally but generally sound as to wind, but Lake Huron is nasty with vast and rapid wind shifts.

The Atlantic is odd for sailors. The coasts facing the ocean must lift pleasure boats for they just won't get insurance. So Scotland's west coast together with Ireland and the Bristol channel thence to St Milo south in France. It's not that there's no sailing in winter but they must raise and return the craft each time. This has somewhat odd effects on sailing competences where the Atlantic boats are good in weather but the English channel are better inshore. Note http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Fastnet_race the number of craft that didn't finish.

    1. Vince, the boat is on a small inland lake, "Wall Lake" which is near Delton, MI. It is about 15 miles from where I live.

    2. Oh that's a nice little lake. That spit makes it a good place to sail train without it getting too tricky. Is that a year round community or just holiday-homes. There doesn't seem to be many cars. But could be that they are undercover.
A lovely spot alright. I just realised though, there isn't a mountain in sight. Is there any within 100 miles.

    3. There are a large number of people who live year-around at the lake, but there are still some cottage types too. As for mountains, there really aren't any true mountains in Michigan, it's pretty flat especially in the southern part (but lots of lakes). The closest think to mountains are the Porcupines where I hiked last year, but that is next to Northern Wisconsin, a long ways from here.

  10. See now I favor the title (and reality of) first sail of the season, so much more. Of course, we are going to have a bit of summertime for a few days, and still into the weekend. So perhaps you will get some summer weather too.

  11. Around here, fall doesn't mean much more than shorter days. I wish the palm trees changed colors.

  12. I'll bet it's getting cold up there. Lovely time, sounds like.

  13. Awww the last sail of the season has to be a bit sad. But you'll appreciate the seat repair come spring.

  14. Yes, winter is well on its way. Though, it will be a welcome change where I live now. :-) Few things put a person in touch with the spirituality inherent in nature like smooth water and a full sail.
