I’m going into the roofing business, or a less than satisfactory way to battle hair loss…

I’d been feeling lethargic for a day or two and then on Friday noticed a red spot on the top of my forehead, over to the left side. When I woke up Saturday morning, it was tingling and burning. I went to the doctor yesterday. I can’t believe it; it appears that I have shingles. If there is any place for shingles to go, the top of my head seems to be a logical. As a kid I’d had Chicken Pox (as I’m sure most other folks my age also experienced). That combined with being over 50 and stress and my recent bout with the flu made me a prime candidate. My doctor (who is a good friend) jokingly asked, “You haven’t been under any stress, have you?” He doesn’t know the half of it, but the half he knows is probably enough. Life has been busy, at home and at work. Since Christmas, I’ve had my share of personnel problems and meetings galore with architects and building committees as well as my regular stuff to do. So now I’m on an anti-viral and taking stuff to reduce the pain and swelling. If there is an acting role out there for Mikhail Gorbachev, I’d be a shoo-in. Of course, I’d have to shave my beard so I think I’ll skip the audition.

  1. No! Don't skip it..go for it. I want to see a Gorbachov movie! And then I will review it too.

I had chicken pox at the ripe old age of 35 years. Man, was it bad?! You bet!

And I get rashes on the back of my neck when I am stressed out. That means all the time.

Why can't I go back being a kid?

  2. Gautami, I'd make a pretty funny Gorbachov with my Southern accent! But then, there are those Hertgoz films in South Africa done in German.

I wish I could say this was an April Fools joke.

  3. I thought shingles was something you got from sitting on cold concrete. Learn something new everyday.

  4. It's a good thing you went to the doc early wnough for him to treat you. I had it on my side and back for 8 days before I realized what it was and it was terribly painful! Hope you recover soon.

  5. I second Judy's remarks. My wife had it on the side and back.

Just yesterday, my doctor tried to sell me on a shingles vaccination. I demurred, but maybe I'll take him up on it.

    Get well.

  6. I wish you lots of luck. My dad had them several years ago and was laid up for almost a month. I think he didn't get it diagnosed as soon as you did.

  7. Murf, I'm trying to think of a come back...

Kenju, I hope it was early enough--he did say that the earlier you start the anti-virus meds the less likely you have of having ongoing pain

Mr. Sherman, Wow, sounds like a lot of people have it--the doctor said that he's seeing more and more cases--one case I know is of a kid who had the Chicken Pox vaccine.

Ed, I hope I'm not laid up long, but I am easily tired.

  14. The last part of your post made me laugh. The first part makes me want to say a little prayer for you. Laughter and prayer...a good way to start the morning.

  18. Sage, Preperation H works for "shingles" at the other end, wonder if they'd work up top? Had a freind that had them on her face once...NO FUN!

It does hit when your immune system is low :( I take an immune booster vitamin supplement now all the time.

  21. My wife woke up this morning with a shingles attack on her back. If she knew I'd read this a few days ago, she'd blame me.

    Cheers.

  23. I'm so sorry Sage. I've had friends and my brother got Shingles a few years back. From all I've heard it is painful and the steroids made the women gain weight. I just don't know if that Chicken Pox thing is true...my brother had them too. A milder case than me but still he had them.

I hope by now you are feeling some better. Poor old thang!

  24. A couple of weeks later, I hope this is all cleared up, and that you manage to ditch some of that stress you're under :)
