Slot Canyon Hiking

In my previous post, I talked about hiking in SW Utah and NW AZ. These photos give a sense of the feel within the slot canyons I wrote about.

I took most of these photos during a backpacking trip through Buckskin Gulch and the Paria River in October 2003. The one with high canyon wall (to the right) was taken on a hike through the Zion Narrows in 2002.

  3. Wow so beautiful--and shows how small we are compared to nature

  4. Murf, we carry a stick when hiking because of Executive Order #1 of our good President Teddy Roosevelt... (that was my attempt to answer humorously in light of your #2 question).

Actually, in canyons you carry a stick (some people carry two poles) because you are often walking through water and the rocks are very slippery. The stick gives you a third leg--at one point in Buckskin the water was over waist deep, there was another place the mud came up to my knees, the pool in the Zion Narrows (shown) was up to my neck (I held my pack over my head and since I was hiking solo, didn't have anyone to take a photo).

The only picture of me among these is the one at the Paria River sign.

  6. Wow. The air must be pristine, or I would hope so.

No way jose on Capote Killing a Mockingbird. You'd only have to read the styles of the one and the altogether different other) author(s).

Anyone want to take me hiking? I have bundles of sticks in my yard.

  7. Ginab, it was some one else's theory, not mine. Although I read both Mockingbird and In Cold Blood, they were decades apart (I think I was in the 8th grade when I read To Kill a Mockingbird and I was out of college when I read In Cold Blood). I'm always ready to hike--just have to find more time! If I could figure out a way to make a living as a professional hiker, I'd be a happy man.
