I tend to veer away from religious figures who advocate discipline and have a harsher view of Christian behavior. If I've learned anything of meaning for me, it is that the world the world is gray and we need to treat each other with compassion.

I had a fiery great uncle who had a fire and brimstone approach to life. He was always concerned about my soul. My scientific bent recognized his, and I was fascinated by the struggle in him to reconcile science and religion. He probably would have been an engineer instead of a fisherman, had he not been born into life-limiting poverty. Outside of his fiery religious bent, he was kind and sweet. What a complicated man of contrasts!

I hope that you have a fabulous time in Scotland! We tend do come at it from a position that stems form developed though derived mostly 100 years later. We forget that the entire structure of the European economy was in flux for the first time since Urban II preached the 1st crusade.
But what we tend to forget in out studies are the towns. We see the great magnets, we see their henchmen. We see the church, in all it's structures. We see the universities, especially the Sorbonne (given the source). We even see the bankers. Who we don't see are the merchants, and they could read, and they could read Latin for they needed the lingua franca.
Et, from a town in Scotland to Genoa wouldn't be a long jump. The trip -depending upon current conditions- was well traveled. And one traveled since Roman times. Say Edinburgh->Berwick-> Norwich-> Across to the Low Countries. Then either down the Rhine. Or more likely down to Brugge or Ypres (the lands of the Dukes of Burgundy) connecting into the Maas and over to the SaĆ³ne and up the Rhone to Geneva.

An ishy definition: A Marcher Society is along the same lines as the Ranches and Cowboys of the old west we saw in the traditional Western Films from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Loosely a society based upon livestock.
